Decorating After Moving House

I find it fun to add my own personality to a house after moving, to me it's a big part of making a house into a home. I enjoy looking at magazines for ideas but I try not to get caught up in trends. After all I want my home to reflect my tastes and I want it to suit my lifestyle.

Two of my favourite quotes about decorating are -
  • 'Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love.' - Nate Berkus
  • 'Have nothing in your home that you don't know to be useful or believe to be beautiful,' - William Morris.
Some of the pictures and wall hangings I had in my previous house are decorating the walls here. However, there were a few items I no longer liked. There were other things which were the wrong size for this house. Therefore I have parted with some things and replaced them with others. I am trying hard to avoid letting 'clutter' pile up, so am following the 'One in, one out' guideline, well most of the time.

On the filing cabinet I have a collection of owls. I bought the first of these back in 1963 or 1964. Owls are my favourite birds and I also have a tapestry and an embroidery I did featuring owls.

I have bought some curtains which suit this house. It's amazing the difference curtains make to a room and now the weather is colder they help to keep the heat in the house.

For my bedroom I bought two cushions to put on my bed. Now, I do know the fashion is to have a pile of cushions or pillows on the bed but I have a question. What are you supposed to do with all those cushions when you are in bed? (Feel free to add your answer in the comments.) Do people pile them up on the floor? Or put them away in a blanket box or a cupboard? I think it looks nice in a magazine picture to see a pile of carefully chosen cushions on the bed but I don't have anywhere to put them when I am sleeping.

It is tempting to buy more than I need. There are many bargain shops which sell all sorts of knick knacks, candles and such. I enjoy going to markets and quirky little shops that sell handmade items. And of course there are op shops which I love. However, I am trying to be conscious of what I already own and only buy what will be used or enjoyed.

My new home is a mixture of things I have had for many years and a few recent purchases. It is lovely to have reminders of the past and these things can bring comfort and a feeling of security. However, I love to have some new things as well and will continue to make a few changes over time.
